Obp Certification Program Overview

Zero Plastic Oceans developed the Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) Certification Program in collaboration with the certification group Control Union. This certification program aims to attest that:

  • OBP plastic waste is collected adequately and ethically
  • OBP plastic waste is well managed once collected
  • Commercially recyclable OBP waste is traceable until the final recycled product
  • Non-commercially recyclable OBP waste is correctly handled, and corresponding plastic credits are thoroughly verified and traceable

The program includes two certification subprograms and the Social+ OBP Component

The Ocean Bound Plastic Neutrality certification subprogram

This certification applies to organizations focusing on non-commercially recyclable OBP, that either collect and treat OBP, or offset a plastic footprint. It is aiming at certifying that OBP waste is ethically collected and treated (eliminated), ensuring corresponding plastic credits are fully verified and traceable and that offsetting claims are real.

The Ocean Bound Plastic Recycling certification subprogram

This certification applies to organizations focusing on commercially recyclable OBP, that either collect OBP, or/and recycle the OBP collected.
It is aiming at certifying that OBP waste is ethically converted into new products.

The Social+ Ocean Bound Plastic certification component

This component applies additionally to organizations focusing on collection of OBP (for either Subprogram) that want to provide substantial benefit to the waste picker community and their own employees to create a more inclusive circular economy benefiting all actors involved.
